Bangkok Community Theatre (BCT) and Dale Gutzman will stage the live, multi-media spectacular "Dracula Undead" at the BangkokTheatre@Metropolis on Rajdamri Road across from Central World Plaza (formerly WTC) on February 22, 23, 24 and 25, 2006. Tickets at B700 for adults and B450 for students will be available at Kinokuniya Books in the Emporium from February 1st.
Dale Gutzman's DRACULA UNDEAD, is an attempt to break the traditional rules of live theatre. It is a combination of ritual, multi-media, dance, music, theatre and audience interaction. It tells the Dracula legend in a new and exciting way, never before attempted on stage. Gypsies wander the audience and recount the vampire myths and legends for the audience. Characters spring out of the audience and a perverse ritual mass is performed to conjure up the undead. Bram Stoker's novel may be the starting point for this unique theatre experience, but Dale Gutzman uses the minds and imaginations of the audience to explore the very nature of fear itself. The play examines our fascination with fear and pain. It travels in time and uses unconventional theatrical effects such as puppets, video, gypsy songs and dances, and a cast that portrays not only humans but horses, wolves, and vampire bats. Reading our favorite horror novel can truly scare us. So can seeing a frightening film. But horror in the theatre has not been fully explored until now. Gutzman first performed Dracula Undead twenty years ago, and he has been refining it and restaging it since then. This will be the fourth version of his show, and a first with Bangkok Community Theatre. The set will be comprised of eight coffins which will be used to build the various scenic pieces. There is also an archway of coffins and a tattered curtain on which projections will be shown. Aaron Kopec, Gutzman's technical designer in America will create film, special effects, and life-sized puppets for the production. In the show, modern day gypsies fashion an altar of sorts, and through a ritual involving hypnotism and ancient chants, they take us into the world of the Vampire. The gypsies become the characters in the story. Other characters emerge out of the audience. Renfield, the madman who eats mice and spiders escapes into the auditorium. Lucy, turned into one of the undead by Dracula, wanders the theatre looking for young flesh to consume. Mina, betrothed of Jonathan Harker, tastes the power of Dracula and feels an uncontrollable erotic attraction to the Darkside. Are the Good strong enough to battle the Evil? Can Jonathan fight off the nightly attacks by three sensuous female vampire forms? Can Dracula be kept out of our hearts and minds? Mr. Gutzman and BCT promise to take you to places never before experienced in a Bangkok theatre. Just as he introduced innovation and creativity to his musical productions of JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR in Bangkok, Dale Gutzman once again stretches the limits of our imaginations with DRACULA UNDEAD.
